Armand A. Fontaine September 26, 1918 - October 23, 2013 Taftville - Armand A. Fontaine, age 95 passed away on October 23, 2013 at St. Joseph Living Center in Windham. He was born in Taftville on September 26, 1918, the son of the late Arthur J. Fontaine and the late Yvonne (Viau) Fontaine. He had lived in Taftville most of his life and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Taftville. Armand graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1937 and Morse College in 1939. He served in the United States Army, reporting to Fort Devens, MA in October 1942, then stationed in Virginia and Ohio until his discharge in 1946. Along with his brother Leo, he owned and operated the tire business started by their Father, the former Ideal Tire Company in Willimantic, until their retirement in 1995. On May 3, 1941 he married his high school sweetheart and the mother of his children, Natalie Balfour Browning She passed away December 15, 1971. On April 18, 1975 he married his second wife, Maralee Rutherford Levesque who passed away June 25, 1978. On April 21, 1979 he was united in marriage to Ethel Chalifoux. They spent 34 years together until her passing on May 6, 2013. Armand is survived by his son Spencer Fontaine and daughter in law Carole (Dubreuil) Fontaine, of Hanover and his grandson Gregory Hawkey of Taftville; he is also survived by his brother Leo Fontaine, Sr. and his Wife Evelyn of Columbia; his sister Doris and her husband Edward Breen of Columbia; his sisters in law from his first marriage, Lois Crowell and Gabrielle Browning, his in laws from his third marriage, Nancy Godere, Evelyn Dzialo, Robert and Sandi Chalifoux and Rose Chalifoux. Armand is predeceased by his daughter Priscilla Hawkey, his brother Eugene Fontaine, His sisters Claire Fontaine and Florence Fontaine; he is also predeceased by several brothers and sisters in law from the Browning and Chalifoux families and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Armand was very dedicated to his family and took great pride in helping in their lives. He met and made many new friends (residents and staff) at Saint Joseph Living Center and was very appreciative of all the care and attention given to him Armand will be laid to rest next to his first wife Natalie and daughter Priscilla in the Maplewood Cemetery of Norwich. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the staff of SJLC and Evercare for their support and compassionate care given to Armand while in their care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in his memory to SJLC End of Life Suite Fund or to SJLC Recreation Department Fund, 14 Club Rd. Windham, CT 06280. Calling hours will be held Monday from 9:00 A.M until 11:00 A.M. at the Guillot Funeral Home, 75 South B. St., Taftville with a Funeral Home Service at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery Norwich.
