JEWETT CITY - Donald Francis Ouillette, 86, passed away Tuesday morning at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born January 8, 1932 in Jewett City, he was the son of the late Henry and Ruth (Rathbun) Ouillette.
Donald attended Riverside Elementary School and Griswold High School, graduating in 1949. After high school, he served with the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War.
Upon returning he attended Norwich Commercial College for Accounting and worked at Wedgewood Mill. He then worked in The Accounting Department of U.S. Finishing. He went on to be the Treasurer and Secretary of the Angus Park Woolen Mill for many years. He then became the owner of the Jewett City Hardware Store for 10 years. He served in the Finance Department of WACAP and was Griswold Town Treasurer for 12 years.
Donald was an active member of his community. He served on the Griswold Board of Finance. He was an organizer and charter member of VFW Post 10004 as well as a Past Commander and longtime Quartermaster. He also served as Treasurer of Jewett City Veterans Council. Donald was a life member of Jewett City Fire Department, a Bank Director of the Jewett City Trust Bank for 22 years, a member of Griswold Business Men's Club and Jewett City Jaycees and served as their president.
Donald was an avid golfer throughout his lifetime. Upon retiring, Don and Carol spent 22 winters in Naples, Florida. While there Don enjoyed golfing with his brother-in-law Bill at Emerald Greens where they lived. Don and Carol also enjoyed annual visits to Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, Maine.
Donald was the devoted husband of his one special love Carol (Mesick) Ouillette for 60 years. In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by his daughter Lori Tomko and husband Robert and grandchildren Kacey and Michael of Old Saybrook; sisters-in-law Irene and Kay Ouillette and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his brothers Henry and Richard Ouillette and his nephew Glen Ouillette.
Calling hours will be 10:00 – 11:30 am on Monday, September 10th at Leffler Funeral Home. A graveside service with full military honors will follow at Pachaug Cemetery.
