James R. Sullivan Obituary
James R. Sullivan January 27, 1948 - October 11, 2012 Waterford - James R. Sullivan, age 64, of Waterford, passed away Thursday October 11, 2012, at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, after an illness at home. Jimmy was born January 27, 1948, in New London, Connecticut. He was the son of James F. and Dorothy Ray Sullivan, both whom predeceased him. While growing up in New London, Jimmy attended the St. Mary's School and graduated high school from St. Bernard's High School earning all ECC Honors in football. He continued his education earning his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Southern Connecticut State College. Upon graduation from college Jimmy began his career as an educator. He worked in various school districts such as Waterford, West Haven, Newington and New London. It was the Montville Public School System where he found his home and longevity retiring after several years of dedication and hard work. Jimmy's commitment to the society didn't stop at educating the youth, in fact it started when he himself was a youth. Jimmy was an Eagle Scout in Troup 11 in New London. He was also a longtime volunteer with Special Olympics, and would annually participate in the Penguin Plunge. And when other's may be facing crises Jimmy was there as a volunteer with the Oswegatchie Fire Department. In fact earning "Fireman of the Year" in 1988/1989. Jimmy also found time to be a Connecticut State Marshall in his years of retirement. For personal enjoyment Jimmy loved his Hondas and joined the New London Motorcycle Club. He was a proud member of the Patriot Guard. On June 21, 1980 in Norwich, Connecticut he married Jackie Levanto, who survives him. The couple made a beautiful life together. Together they shared many interests and traveled, and were recently making plans for the retirement life the two had so desired. In addition to his wife he is survived by his brother Dr. John Sullivan and his wife Carol of Ivoryton. As well as several beloved nieces and nephews; Riley Sullivan, Christopher McKeon, Cody McKeon, Sierra Levanto, Mia Levanto and Dean evanto. Calling hours are Sunday 5-8 PM at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home on 12 Ocean Ave, New London CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am in St. Matthias Church, Chesterfield Rd East Lyme.
