John H. Donahue Nov. 18, 1917 - Jul. 20, 2014 BERLIN - John H. Donahue, 96, a longtime resident of Berlin, CT, and formerly of Norwich, died on Sunday, July 20, 2014. On Nov. 18, 1917 he was born in Norwich, the son of the late John J. and Alvina (Allard) Donahue. John grew up in Norwich where he met his wife of 74 years, Sophie (Walenda) Donahue. They were married on May 30, 1940 in St. Joseph Church in Norwich. John proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan. After the war he returned to Connecticut and began a career as a Mechanical Test Engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford. In addition to his loving wife Sophie, he is survived by a brother Richard Donahue and wife Betsy of Deerfield, FL; three sister-in-laws, Jane Morgan of Bethpage, NY, Gladys King and Genevieve Sucholet, both of Uncasville, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, great grand nieces, and nephews, and great great grand nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents and two sisters, Doris Hill and Pauline Stephanou. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 25, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Church, 120 Cliff St, Norwich, meeting directly at church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The family asks that donations in his memory be made to a charity or organization of personal significance.
