Maurice Joseph Brochu August 16, 1915 - March 23, 2013 Lisbon - Maurice Joseph Brochu, 97, of Lisbon, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013. He was born on August 16, 1915, in St. Claude, Quebec, Canada, son of the late Joseph and Leontine (Maurice) Brochu. He immigrated to Jewett City in 1917. As a young man, he was an accomplished trumpet player in a swing band that played at concert, dance and entertainment halls throughout the region. Maurice married Elva Gwendolyn Davis in 1943 before departing for service in the US Army, where in addition to his regular duties; he served as a bugle boy playing taps, reveille, and retreat. As a veteran of WWII, Maurice took part in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Ardennes as a member of the 3710 Quartermaster Trucking Company. His unit was the first Trucking Company to cross the Rhine River and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for exemplary and valorous service throughout the war. Maurice became a U.S. citizen as a result of his honorable military service. After the war, Maurice was employed by and retired from the Brooklyn Cooperage in Versailles. Maurice was a lover of wildlife and was a member of the World Wildlife Fund. Maurice was a kind and loving man to his family. Some of his hobbies included cooking, woodworking and camping. In his later years, Maurice became an avid horseshoe player who participated in many tournaments throughout the U.S., of which he was a frequent champion. Maurice is survived by his six children, Maurice, Joseph and James Brochu, Cynthia Burdick, Christine Kane, and Elizabeth Tessier; nine grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; his sister, Rita Zeeger of Griswold; dear friend, Lea Sewart of Baltic; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Elva; and siblings, Louis and Henry Brochu, Beatrice Charron, Delia Tedesco, Rose Despres, Evelyn Rioux, Florence Gill, Leah MacFarland, Claire Edwards, and Claudia Przekop. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Leffler Funeral Home, 30 N. Main, Jewett City. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 12:00 P.M. at St. Mary's Church, Jewett City.
