Michael P. Brown Obituary
Michael P. Brown June 30, 1955 - May 13, 2012 Groton - Michael P. Brown, 56, of Groton, passed away unexpectedly in Willimantic, on May 13, 2012. He was born in Norwich, on June 30, 1955, the son of Pauline (Schultz) Brown and the late Michael J. Brown, Jr. He married Rachel (Martin) Brown, originally of Dover, TN, on May 29, 1977. Michael was a graduate of the Austin Peay State University Officer Training Course (ROTC) in Clarksville, TN, in 1977. After graduation, he received his U.S. Army commission in the field artillery, and went on to complete 30 years of active and reserve service, reaching the rank of Colonel. His citations and awards during his military career included the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal. Mike served as city manager in Fayette, MO, and Hickman, KY. He returned to southeastern CT in 1995 to work for The Mohegan Tribe. Over the years, he became a well-respected member of the Mohegan Sun team, and a friend to all he met. Mike always enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge and professional growth. He earned Master's degrees from Webster University, Murray State University, and Army War College. His family was ever-grateful for and ever-impressed by his broad interest, knowledge, and skills in practical, recreational, scientific, and geographic matters. His advice will be dearly missed. Mike was a devoted Red Sox and Connecticut Sun fan. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying cycling and hiking throughout New England. He had been nationally ranked at the club competitive level in orienteering. Mike was a United Methodist. He was a loving husband and father, always intensely proud of his daughters and all that they accomplished. To those lucky enough to experience it, Mike shared his gift of infectious laughter. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rachel M. Brown; his daughters, Dr. Carrie M. Brown and Mikel D. Brown; his mother, Pauline F. Brown of Uncasville; his brothers, Mark F. Brown of Oakdale, and Kevin Brown of Manhattan, KS; and his niece and four nephews whom he treasured. He was predeceased by his father Michael J. Brown, Jr. in 2001 and infant son Michael Martin Brown in 1982. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 24, at the Mohegan Tribal Community Center, 13 Crow Hill Road, Uncasville, CT. The service will begin promptly at 6 P.M., immediately followed by visitation with the family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Appalachian Mountain Club are appreciated.
