Mildred Savage Obituary

Mildred Savage Died - October 7, 2011 Norwich - Mildred Savage, the author, died peacefully at home in Norwich, on October 7, 2011. She was 92. Mrs. Savage was born in New London, the daughter of Ezekiel and Sadie Spitz. She graduated from The Williams School and Wellesley College and began her writing career shortly after college. She married Bernard L. Savage, of Norwich, in 1941. Mr. Savage died in 2002. Mrs. Savage's first book, "The Lumberyard and Mrs Barrie", published under a pseudonym, was a light-hearted work about a young couple starting a lumber yard, as Mr. Savage had done in Norwich. Her next book, "Parrish", was a novel about life on a tobacco plantation in the Connecticut River Valley during the 1950's and was made into a major motion picture. Her next novel, "In Vivo", told the story of the search for a wonder drug - a book that Mrs. Savage researched at Pfizer in Groton. Both "Parrish" and "In Vivo" were Literary Guild main selections. Mrs. Savage was also the author of "A Great Fall", a non-fiction work about a 1966 murder trial in Litchfield, CT, that won the Edgar Allen Poe Award as the best non-fiction book of 1971. Her last novel, "Cirie," was based on the lives of members of her husband's family caught in the sweep of the Russian Revolution. Mrs. Savage is survived by a daughter, Susan Savage Simpson, of Katonah, New York, and a son, Michael Savage, of Groton Long Point and by a granddaughter, Mariana Savage, and a grandson, Eric Simpson, both of New York, NY. A private funeral was held on October 9, 2011. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich. The Church and Allen Funeral Home, was entrusted with arrangements.

Dear Susan:

Not quite 6:AM PCT when I read of Millie's passing in the NY Times. So many memories. She was very special to me. I have thought of her often over these many years, and miss her still: too many unsaid words. A GREAT FALL is always but an arm's length away.

We extend our deepest sympathies and affection.

To the family of Mildred Savage:

Back in the 1980's I had the best supervisor anyone could work for. He had an extensive library from which I could borrow any book that caught my eye. The first book I borrowed was "Parrish". I fell in love with this book and the characters involved. I actually found myself in the background of this marvelous novel watching all of them. I pictured every detail. After having surgery in the late 80"s, my supervisor and his wife visited me at my home during my recovery and he presented my with that novel. To this day I read it once a year in November.

Your mother was a wonderful writer. I hope you will accept my heartfelt condolences.

Hi Susan!
It's been a long time. Seeing your Mothers name in the paper was sad, and I'm sorry for you and your families loss. Seeing her name brought back fond memories of my youth in the neighborhood, and will be instilled in my memory forever. To me your mother ( when I knew her) was a very understanding, influential, and generous person. She always had something nice to say. The world will be sadden by her passing.
