Shirley Lee Benoit April 16, 1952 - February 18, 2013 Salem - Shirley Lee (Ross) Benoit 60, passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2013 in her Salem home. She was born in Norwich on April 16, 1952 to the late Albert Henry "Al" Ross and Bernice Aridra (Schmidl) Ross. Shirley was a graduate of the Norwich Free Academy, class of 1970. She married Charles Walter "Rocky" Benoit in Bozrah on October 11, 1973, and they resided in the Bozrah and Norwich area throughout her life. Shirley worked for the Ames Department Store, Big Y and Better Value Supermarkets, and Bozrah Pizza. During retirement, she became a Reiki Master and helped many people with her gift of healing. She inspired others with her strength and positive attitude. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she spent many years raising two of her grandchildren, Tailor and Gavin, who were her prized possessions. She was the heart of the family and always kept communication flowing amongst its many members. She loved being outdoors, her animals, reading, music, singing, sewing, cooking and time with family and friends. Her incredible sense of humor and infectious laughter could keep one in stitches, and when something must be said, Shirley didn't beat around the bush. Shirley leaves behind her husband Charles "Rocky" and their son Roger (Bonnie) Benoit. In addition to Tailor and Gavin, she leaves her grandchildren, Lexi and Billy; four brothers, William (Jane) Ross, Edward (Janet) Benoit, Richard Benoit and David (Barbara) Benoit; five sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Wright; Sandra (Raymond) Blanchette, Laura (Charles) Knight, Deborah Butler and Linda Benoit; her favorite Uncle, Chauncey Ross; her favorite Aunts Della Zahacefski and Bessie Richardson, and many special nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her stepson Jeffrey Benoit, her father's 45 year companion, Flora Francis Hurst Benoit, who brought warmth and love back to the family home, several years after Shirley's mother departed; her brother Albert Henry "Butch" Ross, Jr., and her sister, Kathleen Ross. The family looks forward to greeting relatives and friends at the Memorial Gathering on Wednesday February 27, 2013 6-8 P.M. at the Oakdale, CT Fire Department, 444 Chapel Hill Road, Oakdale, CT 06370.
