Charles T. Fessenden Obituary
Charles T. Fessenden Mar. 3, 1935 - Apr. 2, 2014 NORWICH - Charles T. Fessenden, 79, passed away on April 2, 2014, at Norwichtown Rehabilitation Center in Norwich. Born in Athol, MA, on March 3, 1935, he was son of Dr. Raymond and Mary Fessenden and brother of Frederick Fessenden. He graduated from UMass, Amherst, in 1958, majoring in physics. In 1963, he received a MS degree in Electrical Engineering, with honors, from UConn, Storrs. He began his career in 1958 as an electrical engineer at the Naval Underwater System Center, NUSC, in New London and Newport, RI. He was recognized over the years for his many submarine antenna inventions, for which patents were pursued. He progressed to management and retired as branch head of the Submarine Antenna Division after 40 years with NUSC. In 1958 he married Lillian Sherwood of Royalston , MA, and they moved to Preston, where they had four sons: Thomas , who married Lee Ann Onderdonk of Preston; Andrew, who married Lisa Osga of Griswold; Gregory of Westerly, RI; and Paul of Griswold. They have four grandchildren: Joshua, Nicholas, Jacob, Katie Gates and one great grandchild, Brent Fessenden. The family's favorite travel destinations included Nubanuset Lake, NH and biking on Cape Cod. Charles loved baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox. He played baseball in high school and college, and coached little league teams on which his sons played. A long-time member of the Preston Congregational Church, Charles sang in the choir, served as moderator, deacon and church clerk for many years. He was one of the persons responsible for the expansion of the Sunday School addition to the church in 2001. Calling hours will be at the Preston Congregational Church on Sunday, April 6, from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 7, at 11A.M. at the Preston Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Preston Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 321 Route 164, Preston, CT 06355.
