Patricia M. (Planchon) Whipple Dec. 4, 1940 - Apr. 14, 2014 GROTON - Patricia M. (Planchon) Whipple, 73, of Groton and formerly of Stonington died peacefully on Monday April 14, 2014 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous fight with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Wendell O. Whipple Sr. who sadly predeceased her in 1994. Born in Plainfield on December 4, 1940 she was the daughter of the late M. Steven and Dorothy (Veit) Planchon. Patty graduated from Stonington High School class of 1958. She was an active member of the Stonington Republican Town Committee where she also served as Secretary. For 13 years she was a Registrar of Voters for the Town of Stonington. Patty was an avid reader, bird watcher, and a New York Yankees and Giants fan. She was a devoted wife, mother, nana and friend. She leaves her children; Wendell O. Whipple Jr. and his wife Melissa of Lisbon, Susan Jordhamo and her husband George of Hopewell Junction, New York and Kathy Penney and her husband John of Norwich. Grandchildren; Adam, Steven, Kristin, Kate, Michael, Jeffrey and Aaron. Great grandchildren; Jack and Abigail. She was the sister-in-law of Bill Whipple and his wife Debbie, Jane Lawrence and her husband Jeff, May Helen Hildreth and her husband Ned, and Brenda Planchon. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her beloved cat Bailey. Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by her two brothers; Robert and George Planchon. The family wishes to thank all the doctors and chemo nurses at the New London Cancer Center, especially Dr. Vanessa Johnson for the care and compassion they showed to their mother. Many thanks to her friends who supported her and drove her to her appointments; Helen, Anne, Barbara, Paul and Myrna. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. at the United Congregational Church, 9 Castle Hill Road, Pawcatuck, CT 06379. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Burial will be in River Bend Cemetery, Beach St. Westerly. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly. In lieu of flowers donations in Patricia's memory may be made to L+M Cancer Center, 365 Montauk Avenue, New London, CT 06320.
