Marie Anne Discola Biederka Dec. 4, 1925-Apr. 17, 2014 NEW LONDON - Marie Anne Discola Biederka died Thursday April 17, 2014 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London. She was born in Norwich, the daughter of Andrew James Discola and Mildred Elizabeth Carr Discola. A 1943 graduate of Norwich Free Academy, Marie went on to study nursing at Stamford Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1946. Marie wed John Dominick Biederka on September 4, 1948 (John passed April 24, 2004). Together they embraced two philosophies-a strong family and hard work. They had two children, Joanne Holland(husband Justis), son Jeremy Shawn (wife Elizabeth), and great-grandson Theodore, and John William Biederka (wife Kathleen: sons John Franklin, Charles, Andrew), Chris Leitkowski, Laura Lewis, and Kurt Leitkowski. Marie began her life's work as a nurse at Norwich Hospital in 1946. She left Norwich Hospital during the 60's to raise her family, and returned to state employment at the Niantic Correctional Facility, retiring in 1979. After retirement Marie taught a CNA program sponsored by the facility for several years. Marie was a dedicated professional who willingly shared her talents and knowledge. She was an avid reader and created many beautiful handcrafted items as hobbies. She will be dearly missed by those who cherished the gifts she shared. Marie is predeceased by a sister, Helene Esterby, and a brother, James Discola. Visitation will be Monday April 21, 2014 from 5-7 P.M. and again on Tuesday April 22, 2014 from 10-11 A.M. at the Labenski Funeral Home 107 Boswell Avenue Norwich. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday April 22nd at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Divine Providence Cemetery Norwich. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her name may be made to the Norwich Technical High School CNA program 590 New London Tpke. Norwich CT 06360.
