Laren Maurice Pottie Obituary
Laren Maurice Pottie July 2, 1927 - November 2, 2012 Mystic - Laren Pottie of Mystic, formerly of Norwich, passed on into the Lord's arms November 2nd, 2012.
Laren was born in Worcester, MA and grew up in Mechanicsville. He is a graduate of Tourtellotte Memorial High School and Hartford University.
Laren is survived by his best friend and wife of 62 years - Eleanor, his son David of Mystic and his son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Kimberly of Half Moon Bay, CA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Brady, Jillian Brady, Danny Vollmer, Kristina Dietz, David Pottie and one great grandchild Sebastian. He is preceded by his daughter Catherine, two brothers, and sister - Armand, Clarence, and Louise.
Laren loved life and especially his family. A special joy of his was fishing and the endless search to catch the big one; but mostly he enjoyed the peacefullness of just having a pole in the water and the surrounding serenity.
He also took great pleasure in the yearly family vacations - having the relatives together and just enjoying each other.
During WWII, Laren served behind enemy lines, working with MI-6 and the OSS to deliver radios to the French Partisans as part of Operation Bodyguard, Patton's fake invasion of Pas de Calais.
He also served as a Navy Medic in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Laren served at the Groton Sub Base post war, where he met his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Jean Makowicki of Norwich.
Laren served the community his entire life: he was a Boy Scout Leader from the 1950's until the 1980's, established the first computer classes for the Diocese of Norwich Schools, and voluntarily taught computer classes to children of all ages at the Diocese of Norwich for fifteen years. He furnished the schools with computers by acquiring them through donations or simply building them from salvaged computer parts.
Laren Maurice Pottie was a good man, a good Christian, a good father and a good husband. He will be missed by many, but in our thoughts forever.
Calling hours will be on Monday, November 5th at Woyasz & Son Funeral Home located at 11 Jerome Road, Montville from 4-7 PM. Church services will be on Tuesday, November 6th at St. Joseph's Church located at 120 Cliff Street Norwich, CT at 11AM. A Military Graveside Service is scheduled following the services.
