Barski, Rita
Rita Barski's character was, like her stories, complex, funny and thoughtful to the last detail or nuance. Of Jewish heritage, she was born in London, England. During the Second World War, she was evacuated to the countryside in "Operation Pied Piper" along with thousands of children to escape the bombing. She used her humor, intelligence and ability to captivate and entertain those around her to overcome her shyness and survive loss. She immigrated to Canada after marrying another survivor, Henry Barski, who had escaped occupied Poland to fight in the British Air Force. They shared an enduring love and understanding of each other that transcended time. She lived with a classic style and a passion for social, political and criminal justice. She succumbed after a long illness precipitated by a broken heart with the loss of her husband. She is survived by two sisters and a nephew, who live in England, a cousin, who lives in Arizona, a niece, who lives in Poland, her god-daughter and those who mourn the loss of an exceptional woman who touched their lives.

Hawrysh, Bert
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bert, on April 21st, 2015, at the age of 83. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Eileen (Nordstrom); his children Brian (Randina Walker) of White Rock, Alexander and Katherine of North Vancouver; his sister Alice of Petersfield, Manitoba; and his extended family in Alberta and Manitoba. Born and raised in Manitoba, Bert and Eileen married in 1953, then made their way to BC, initially living in Nanaimo where Bert started work as a lineman for BC Hydro. His growing career with Hydro took him to many cities in BC, but they eventually settled in North Vancouver and have lived there since 1967. He earned an MBA at SFU and was on the Board of Governors. He also completed a Business Degree at Harvard. At one point, he was very involved in the United Way. When he left BC Hydro he worked for a number of years with the Council of Forest Industries and finally as an adjudicator for the Worker's Compensation Board, where he was fondly known as "the Judge". Bert enjoyed travel, particularly to European, Mexican and US destinations where he quickly made himself at home with the locals. His volunteer work included UBC's Museum of Anthropology, the Maritime Museum and Expo 86. He loved family, music, gardening, cooking, good wine and spirits. Bert was a voracious reader and his thirst for knowledge had him back at University after full retirement, taking courses on all manner of topics he found of interest. He was a member of many Boards and Societies in his lifetime and was always up-to-date on current world events. Bert touched many lives and will be fondly remembered for his contributions, and missed dearly by his family. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that you donate to your favourite charity.
