Neumann, John
NEUMANN - John The one and only John Neumann left this world on July 13th, 2015 at the age of 63. "Spicman" was born in Brazil but came to Canada as a child. After sustaining a spinal cord injury in 1973, John went on to achieve many firsts as a quadriplegic. Whether it was driving a van, going to university, working full time, busing around the community, or travelling to Hawaii, John showed us all how to live large with a disability. It is a testament to the indomitable spirit of John and other pioneers that we now look at these activities as normal for people with disabilities. John served his community in so many ways: volunteering for committees that improved access, advocating for people with disabilities, and donating to many worthy causes. He saw the best in people, had a strong sense of right and wrong, and treated everyone with respect. John's happiest times were spent dining out with friends, listening to live music, eating Fiona's cooking and reading by the ocean in Hawaii. Never one to let a disagreement fester, John had many lifelong friends who enriched his life immeasurably. Throughout his various health challenges, he and Fiona were sustained by a loving network of friends, work colleagues, caregivers and family members. He was predeceased by his father John and his sister Lorraine. He is survived by his loving wife Fiona, his beloved mother Pam, his sister Carol (Stan), his brother Tom, his sister-in-law Maxine, his brother-in-law James (Leanne) and his nieces and nephews: Michael, Natalie, Marissa, Sarah, Jenny, Ian and Sam, and so many friends who loved him dearly. Those wishing to remember John are encouraged to share his community spirit by volunteering, helping others in need or donating to the North Shore Disability Resource Centre or the Salvation Army. A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date, which will be announced on the funeral home website (www. Firstmemorialfuneral.com ).
