Neville, Gertrude Mary (Schmitt)
NEVILLE, Gertrude Mary (née Schmitt) passed away peacefully on July 13th 2015 at Lion's Gate Hospital. A proud North Van resident for more than 50 years, Gertrude was born on July 9th, 1925 in Rochester New York. As a teenager, she moved with her family to northern Germany and, as the war ended, met her English soldier husband Charles. They married in England, and started a family: first Robert and Anne, followed by Tom after immigrating to Canada in 1953. Gertrude loved the North Shore and her many friends and neighbours, mostly centered on the family home on East 21st Street, where she raised her children, conjured her amazing tortes and managed her beloved family Christmases and special occasions. She sang always: German folk tunes and favorite bits from musicals and operettas. She read unceasingly, her armchair surrounded by papers and books. She equally loved her many dachshunds! The Western Dachshund Club will dedicate its 2015 show to her memory. Gertrude also cared deeply about Lion's Gate Hospital and its staff and they returned her care during a number of difficult times of illness. She proudly volunteered for decades at the Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. Gertrude also made many friends during her more than 20 years working at Woodward's Park Royal. Gertrude is survived by her three children and by grandchildren Kate Mogg, Charlotte Neville and Jeremy Inkel. Also by daughters-in-law Terri Neville and Ingrid Hennig and by Ingrid's mother Margaret, who became like another sister. And by her younger brother Tom Schmitt and cousin Helmut Soltau. Warm thanks are due to the staff at Lion's Gate, to Dr. Lakha for years of caring and to the staff at Churchill House, which gave Gertrude a wonderful community during her last years. There will be no memorial service at her request. Donations in her name may be made to the Lion's Gate Hospital Auxiliary.
