1919 - 2012

We announce with deep sadness the death of Colin Hempsall on December 29th at the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver.

Colin is survived by his daughters Barbara (Martin) of Ganges, Shelley (Gordon) of Westbank, his brother Leslie (Ellen) of White Rock and his devoted wife Ruth.

Colin was born and educated in Vancouver. He served in the R.C.A.F. during WWII and upon discharge in 1945 attended the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr College of Art and Design). Colin's creative ability combined with his painting and writing skills attracted him to a career in advertising where he remained until deciding to fulfill his life-long dream of ocean sailing. He purchased the hull of a 41 foot ketch and spent the next five years completing the interior and rigging. At the age of 59 he left from the West Vancouver Yacht Club on a single handed voyage to Hawaii, Samoa and Tonga before starting the long journey home. On his return he began a successful career as an artist. Many of his paintings reflect his love of the sea and sailing. He was a Honorary Life Member of the West Vancouver Yacht Club.

His family extends most grateful thanks to Dr. Wayne Smith for his many years of care and sound advice. Also, special thanks to the staff at Lynn Valley Care Centre, especially Vilma, Arlene and Billie who attended to Colin with great kindness. At Colin's request there will be no service. Donations in Colin's name to the Corinthian Fund of the West Vancouver Yacht Club would be greatly appreciated.
