JACK SOUTHER Obituary

SOUTHER - JACK GORDON, PhD April 25, 1924 - June 1, 2014 . Jack died after a long and courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind Betty, his loving wife, best friend and partner through sixty years of an adventure-filled life, and his three daughters Anne, Barbara (Bob) and Janet (Robert), grandchildren Chevar, Jarone, Tara and Bryce (Richelle) and great grandson, Logan, and extended family members in Alberta and B.C. Jack was first and foremost a scientist. He had a successful, enjoyable career with the Geological Survey of Canada, working in spectacular wilderness locales, primarily in Northwest B.C., the Yukon and the Canadian Arctic. He became Canada's first volcanologist. In retirement he spent much of his life in Whistler where he volunteered as a Mountain Host at Whistler/Blackcomb. Jack wrote many natural history and travel articles for PIQUE Newsmagazine and made many friends in the community. His interests and talents were numerous and diverse. We will greatly miss him, but he left us all with many tangible creations and indelible memories. The family would like to thank Dr. Sasha Smiljanic, Dr. Paul Sugar, Dr. Michael Kates, and the many caring staff at Lions Gate Hospital. In lieu of flowers, Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, B.C. Cancer Foundation, Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation (paulsugarfoundation.com) or charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 22nd, 3-5pm. Holiday Inn & Suites, 700 Old Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver (North end, Ironworkers Memorial Bridge).
