West Vancouver, B.C.
It is with great sadness that his family announces the death of James Sweeney, retired children's dentist on Saturday, March 9, 2013. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan on December 13, 1932, he was one of five children of Dr. Denis Brendan and Alice Smith Sweeney. Dr. Sweeney obtained his Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan and his degree in Dentistry from the University of Toronto. Jim found profound joy and constant challenges throughout his 43-year career caring for children and youth. He consistently worked in organizations to strengthen standards of professional excellence in dentistry. He was the first Canadian president of the International Association of Orthodontics and a 35-year member of the American Academy of Dentistry, in addition to many other organizations. Jim leaves behind his beloved family: his wife of 51 years, Ann Marie Forbes Sweeney; his three children - daughter Brenda Ann (Don) of Oakville, Ontario; son John Edward (Alba) of Barrie, Ontario; son James Martin of West Vancouver, B.C.; and his three treasured grandchildren - Daniel Martin Nelson, James Edward Nelson and Lina Marcella Sweeney. Jim Sweeney enjoyed everything about life from: his constant care of his beautiful gardens at his waterfront home; visiting his beloved friends; riding into remote wilderness areas to hunt big game and most important visiting with the local people whom he respected greatly; and annual trips with Ann Marie and various orders of Catholic nuns into barrios and jungle communities in South America to improve education and nutrition for children and career programs for young adults. In his professional practice, Jim appreciated and cherished his patients as family and friends. His staff were a source of deep love and respect throughout all those years. In celebration of Jim's life, a Visitation and a Funeral Mass were held at Christ the Redeemer Church (650 Keith Road, West Vancouver) on Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th. The Mass was followed by a luncheon at Eagle Harbour Yacht Club where stories of Dr. Jim were shared. Jim's family has created a memorial fund with Scouts Canada (www.scouts.ca) to help children go to camp and learn to love nature as he did.
