NAHANEE, Leona Melrose Sunrise: July 15, 1936 – Sunset: November 19, 201 . We are saddened to announce the loss of our most loved and respected elder 'Ma' who passed peacefully in her home surrounded by song with family and loved ones. Ma survived a tremendous battle with cancer and carried a true spirit of faith and hope. She will be fondly remembered by our community for Tribal Journeys with the K'xwu7lh seagoing canoe and travels with NVCC at canoe races throughout the lower mainland. In the mid '70 – mid '90 Lee mentored youth as their home school coordinator while working alongside with families, Squamish Nation Education Department and School Districts. Leona was able to create cultural awareness in the public school system and helped to bridge a gap for many aboriginal youth. She is survived by her sons Larry (Danielle), Stewart and Wesley (Joyce); daughters Kathleen and Zena (Donny); children Joey Baker, Ryan Willis and Serena Williams and many, many more. She is also survived by her grandchildren Shannon, Bonnie, Rodney, Tyson, Wade, Lena, Sam, Saleo, Pheonix, Cassandra, Domonique and Janet-Lee; great grandchildren Kachina, Darcy, Slatev, Kylynn, Keagen, Phylamen, Rainah, Ryan, Harmony, Iesha, Alisha, Tyson Jr., Tyselle, Tyra, Taisja, Cypress, Mabel, Aylissa and Cheyanne; and great great granddaughter Jayla.
