Michael RADVAK Obituary

RADVAK, Michael . It is with deep sadness that the family of Michael (Mike) Radvak announces the passing of our much beloved son, little brother, uncle, brother-in-law and true friend on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the age of 49. Mike is survived by his parents, Steve and Clarisse, his siblings, Bill (Ann Marie), Steven (Silvia), Marie Whelan (Steve Kitson) and Joanne Lustre (Tony), as well as 16 treasured nieces and nephews, and a great-nephew. Mike will forever be remembered for his kind and gentle manner, beautiful smile, infectious laugh, and a twinkle in his eye that revealed his mischievous nature. He grew up in West Vancouver as the youngest of five children and graduated from Hillside Secondary, developing a talent for golf and a passion for fishing. Mike had a deep abiding love for the outdoors, where he experienced serenity and peace of mind. Recently, summers were spent as a fishing guide in the north, but he also had a degree in business from Arizona State University, a successful career as a stockbroker, was trained as a firefighter, and was a certified carpenter. He was a truly amazing and talented, yet modest, man. Mike felt that he was grounded by his family, but he was actually the cornerstone in so many family gatherings. He was endlessly amused and amazed by his nieces and nephews, and formed connections they will remember forever. Mike's family was proud of his strength, courage and determination during his long battle with depression. His gentle loving nature and willingness to truly listen drew people to him, and he made friends at every turn in the road. His family thanks those friends for helping to make Mike's life so rich and meaningful. Mike will be deeply missed by all. Rest in peace, Mikey. There will be a celebration of Mike's life on February 8th, 2014, from 1pm-4pm at the Capilano Golf and Country Club. I still think of you Mikey and miss that wonderful smile. I will always treasure our conversation at Starbucks and how much you helped just by listening. I hope and pray that you are at peace Golden Boy and perhaps even watching as I continue to walk the trails we discussed.

It's only with the passing of Mike's father that I have learned of Mike's death, and I am truly saddened by it. It simply will be a void for me. Mike and I became good friends in the early 2000's and saw each other often. He was a great guy, full of fun and mischief, also sadly burdened with depression. I am sorry that we eventually lost touch because he held a special place in my life. I will surely miss him. At the same time, I am doubly sad for the Radvak family in the loss of two of their members. My sincere sympathy goes to all of you, and Yvonne Maes whom I met through Mike because we shared similar experiences. Peace and blessings to all.

Mike, I was deeply sadden to hear of your passing. You were so nice to me when we were helping Bill and Ann on their house, and i was so envious of your job as a fishing guide. You were, and always will be, a truly gentle soul.

I can't imagine the sadness you must be feeling for the loss of Mike. I will always remember him with a toothy grin on the playground at West Bay school. My thoughts are with you all.

A mutual Hillside grad told me of Mike's passing today on the seawall. I was truly saddened to hear of his loss and I instantly thought of his beautiful and mischievous grin. He always had a kind word and knew how to make me giggle. He was a lovely human being and I wish I had continued to know him as an adult. I am amazed and proud of all that he accomplished and explored in his life. I am sorry he suffered in the end as I know just how painful the pain of depression can be, especially for someone like Mike. My thoughts are with all his family and friends who have lost a wonderful human being.

I was so sad to open up the North Shore News to see this! We were away and not even aware of the service until I read this today. I met Mike over 16 years ago through some friends at the time. I last saw Mike at Delany's in Edgemont where he was having a coffee and we chatted a while. He was always smiling and had a definite 'twinke' in his eyes that always left you guessing what he was thinking deep down. He was a very warm and loving person who will certainly be missed by many. My condolences go out to his family at this sad time. May you be comforted in knowing how many loved and respected him but more importantly that there had to be a very good reason he was chosen to be moved from this life to the next.

Sending my deepest sympathy to the Radvak family at this time of great sorrow. I met Mike many years ago when he was still a broker, through a mutual friend, Simon Wills. I was very impressed at his personal and career journey over the part years, in his pursuit to find satisfaction and fulfillment. He had a great, quick wit which I've rarely seen matched, deep intelligence and inner wisdom which was unique. His qualities will be remembered by all who met him.

My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the Radvak family for your tragic loss. I first met "Mikey" at St. Anthony's Sunday school in grade 4 and was instantly drawn by his beautiful smile and fun personality. I still vividly remember his mischievousness and the antics he used to pull. He had a warm and genuine nature and a way of making one feel immediately at ease. In later years I was impressed by his intelligence and that he seemed to be wise beyond his years. I am so sad that he suffered inside while yet making so those around him so comfortable and happy. Mikey, every time I walk the trails by Seymour River, I will send you a silent prayer of gratitude for your kindness and for the wonderful memories you've given me.

My deepest sympathy's for all of Mike's loved one's. You all must be so very heartbroken. Mike was a bright light and a shining star. I know how he felt inside though, i myself am a fellow sufferer, and have recently been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Please know that none of this is anyone's fault and that even with a ton of love and support sometime's the monster called depression can be too much to bear. Mike is free of pain now and he know's how much he was loved. "Nothing Gold Can Stay".........

It is with a heavy heart that I say good bye to a gentle soul whom I will always remember as Mikey. My thoughts and prayers go to all of the Radvak family, to heal their broken hearts. Mikey is at peace and I hope you can look back over his whole life well lived, and not focus on the tragic end. Take comfort in his love for you and recognize that he would not want any of you to be sad. Instead maybe try to focus on the good times you shared and can still smile about. With my love and and hugs to you all, Billy Kelsberg

Dear Radvak family,

I knew Mike through yoga. When I started teaching, he was the first person to tell me I was a talented teacher - and, at that time, I really needed to hear that. I loved his open heart, gentle spirit, and quiet steady presence in the room.
I stayed after class Wednesday night (Jan. 29) to talk with him. We talked about his battle with depression, I told him what a lovely man he was, among many other things - we laughed and cried a bit. I wish I knew that was our last conversation, I wish I'd said what he needed to hear - the way he had done for me two years earlier.
I am so deeply sorry for your loss,
Much love to your family. Much love to Mike.

During our time of connection, Mike touched my heart and helped me to grow. He continues to inspire me as I read about his drive to pursue his passions and create his own unique journey here on earth. May the ache of your despair and sorrow find moments of reprieve as you come together to mourn, remember and to work towards integrating the terrible loss of Mike into your lives.

My most sincere sympathy for Joanne and family. When I moved to West Vancouver from Fernie B.C. , the Radvak family were the first I met. I was always in constant wonder at the large happy family and the respect and fun they all had together. I do remember Mikey because he did have a great smile and from the photo, I see that did not change. It was an honor to meet him, and his entire family! Chris Warwick ( nee White)
