Born in Nordhausen, Karl-Heinz Friedich Werner Claus, Dipl.Ing., P.Eng, passed away peacefully in West Vancouver, age 93. He is survived by his loving wife Inge, daughter Elke, son Berni Claus, (Kelly), grandsons Jethro and Kulan, great-grandson Kolby and extended family including Ian, Jennifer and Chris.

During the War he served as Captain in the German Artillery, primarily in the Crimea where he was awarded the Iron Cross. Badly wounded near the end of the war he was able to retreat, likely saving his life. He found his home town destroyed by fire bombing, where he lost many relatives including his mother, father, first wife and daughter.

After the war he studied Civil Engineering at the Technical University Berlin/Charlottenburg, where he met his wife Inge also studying engineering. After graduation, marriage, and immigration to Canada in 1951 he quickly found work as an engineer in Quebec designing a hydro-electric project before arriving in West Vancouver in 1955, where he lived ever since.

As a Professional Engineer he provided civil and structural engineering services, primarily with the industrial sector and starting his own Claus Engineering in 1966. He focused on the structural design of pulp and paper mills, port development, and associated works like ship loaders and material handling. For example, driving across Lions Gate Bridge, you will see some of his designs in the large blue storage sheds and other works at Vancouver Wharves.

Throughout his life Werner loved the oceans and the mountains. Accordingly, he spent much time gunkholing the southern coast of B.C. with his sloop "Forelle." In his later years he would sit on the porch gazing up at Crown Mountain, one of the mountains he first climbed 50 years prior.

Our family extends a deep appreciation to everyone working at the West Vancouver Care Centre and to Dr. Conly, who's medical knowledge, compassion and benevolence blesses our family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 22, 2012 at 2:00pm, in West Vancouver. Contact berni_claus@yahoo.com
