Darren Keith "Joe" Rhodes, 77, of Front Royal, died Saturday, February 8, 2014, in the Winchester Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 12, at 1:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Pastors Bobby and Dianne Whetzel. Interment will follow in the Panorama Memorial Gardens at Waterlick with full military honors provided by the VFW
Post 2123 of Winchester.
Joe was born April 18, 1936 in Emoryville, West Virginia son of the late Elmer T. "Patty" and Ollie Joy Reed Rhodes. He was a Korean War veteran
having served his country in the U.S. Air Force
for eight years. Joe had worked for Avtex Fibers in Front Royal and retired from Boeing. He was a member of the VFW Post 1860, the Giles B. Cook Post 53 of the American Legion, and a volunteer for Rivermont Fire Department for many years.
He was preceded in death by a sister Joyce E. "Pat" Kelly; a brother Harold E. Rhodes; and his special dog Smokey.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 54 years Mary Margaret Umstot Rhodes; three children Darren "Little Joe" "Jody" Rhodes, Jr. and his companion Loretta Merritt, Jeffrey Todd Rhodes, and Sheri Dawn Mitchell and her companion James E. "Jamie" Mahoney, Jr.; one brother Gerald E. "Jake" Rhodes and wife Dorothy of Florida; a sister Bonnie S. Wisecarver of Mississippi; three special grandchildren Tracey Pauley and husband Justin, Dylan Mitchell, and Brandon Mitchell; one special great-grandson Tyler Cole Pauley; two special nieces Shanna Henry and Kim Selders; and many other nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be William "Inky" Burke, Lynwood "Farmer Brown" Broy, Harry Hill, Sam Reel, Claude Reel, and Rob Engle.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
