Lillian Hazel Elizabeth Franklin Priest, 97, passed from this life on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, Virginia.
Mrs. Priest was born March 8, 1916 in Cedarville, Virginia to the late Arthur Jackson Franklin and Nellie Lee McBee and was raised by her maternal grandparents, the late Jackson Beaurgard McBee and Lillian "Lilly" Jane Athey.
On December 23, 1933 Hazel married her childhood sweetheart, Carlton Jackson "C.J." Priest in Hagerstown, Maryland. They were blessed with 63 years together until his death in 1997.
Mrs. Priest worked at the Silk Mill formerly located in Front Royal, Virginia and later became the first original manager for the Tastee Freeze enterprise and worked at several locations in Front Royal. Mrs. Priest was a long time clerk at the former Warren Quality Shop, also located in Front Royal, and retired as a receptionist for Frank H. Reuling, Jr., M.D.
Mrs. Priest was a long time member of the Happy Creek Primitive Baptist Church where she served as Church Secretary for many years. Hazel was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and in the company of her church family. She was always a gracious host and loved to entertain friends and family in her home. Nothing brought her greater joy than preparing and sharing meals. Her home was often filled with out of town Elders and church guests where quite often an impromptu hymn sing would occur, as she loved to sing.
Mrs. Priest is survived by her daughters, Bettie Williamson of Bentonville, Virginia and Doris Brown (Ronald) of Bradenton, Florida; a son, Carlton Jackson "Jack" Priest, Jr. (Martha) of Browntown, Virginia; son in law, Daniel L. Wines of Mechanicsville, Virginia; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Ameigh of Winchester, Virginia and Anna Madigan, of Stephens City, Virginia; and one brother, Thomas Franklin of Winchester, Virginia; and her little companion, Rudy, whom she affectionately called "Baby Dog".
Mrs. Priest was preceded in death by her husband; daughters, Barbara Jean Priest and Shirlie Priest Wines; granddaughter, Pamela Wines Edwards; grandson, Scott Priest Brown; and six brothers, Lee Riley Franklin; James Franklin, George Franklin, Charles Franklin, Robert Franklin, and Herbert Franklin; and a son in law, Richard L. Williamson.
A funeral service will be conducted by Elder Gary Utz Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons Richard A. Williamson, Ronald P. Brown, Jr., C. J. "Jay" Priest, III, Jeffrey L. Priest, Daniel L. Wines, Jr., and grandson in law, Jeffrey Lehew.
Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron W. Seal, Dennis R. Seal, Wayne Newman, Donald Atwood, Charles Sutphin, Sam Baggarly, and Mike Helminski.
Family and friends will be received at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal, Virginia on Thursday, March 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Priest's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Lynn Care Center, Shenandoah Gardens, for the care they provided. They also thank all those who visited with her or sent cards.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, as she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and Sister in Christ.
