J. Frank Forsyth III, 97, departed this life Monday, January 14, 2013.
Mr. Forsyth was born November 7, 1915, the son of the late Susan Madison Crawford and J. Frank Forsyth, Jr. of Front Royal.
Mr. Forsyth attended Warren County Schools and graduated from Randolph Macon Academy. He was a longtime volunteer with Front Royal's Fire Department. He attended the College of William and Mary and was a member of The Virginia Military Institute's Class of 1937.
His home heating oil business provided comfort to thousands of families in the Front Royal and Northern Virginia areas. In 1947, he was appointed Agent of The Texas (oil) Company. Frank served in the United States Navy
and he was a lifelong member of American Legion Giles B Cook Post # 53.
An avid flyer for 55 years, Frank served with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the U.S. Air Force Search and Rescue Auxiliary. He was instrumental in starting the Front Royal squadron and served as squadron commander of the Staunton, VA unit, capping a 35 year CAP career.
In the 1960's, Frank and his wife, Catherine (Kitty), moved to Staunton, VA as he pursued his second professional career as a Right-of-Way agent with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Upon retirement, he continued serving his community as a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church vestry, was a charter member and officer of the Shenandoah Valley Food Bank, and a Meals-On-Wheels program volunteer. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, the OX5 Aviation Pioneers Club (a group of individuals who flew WWI aircraft powered by the unique OX5 engine) and the Ham Radio Operators Club (Call sign WD4LES).
In 2011, Frank relocated to Colorado to be closer to family after Kitty's death. He missed her terribly after being inseparable more than 72 years.
Frank is survived by his three children, Ms. Susan Parsley with fellow aviator Randy Williams of Moneta, VA, Mrs. Bea Oettinger and her husband, Melvin, of Charlotte, NC, and Lt. Col. (Ret) John Forsyth and his wife, Leslie of Lone Tree, CO; five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
