Linde Hayden (Creekmore) Herman(1924 - 2013)

The celebrated actor and educator Linde Hayen Herman of Strasburg, Virginia, died on August 12, 2013.

She was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on November 4, 1924 of Atha and William Creekmore.

She was married to Harold Herman on July 20, 1969.

Ms. Herman was an actor, director, playwright, and instructor of theatre at Shenandoah University. Through her varied and illustrious career she worked with such notables as Boris Karloff, Paulette Goddard, Farley Granger and Margaret O'Brien. Some of her most significant roles include Lady MacBeth at San Cristobal in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Lizzie in "Rain Maker" at Tapia Theatre in San Juan, Grace in "Grace and Glory" at Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville Pennsylvania and Daisy in "Driving Miss Daisy" also produced at Totem Pole Playhouse.

Among Ms. Herman's favorite theatres where she participated in the company was Old Globe Theatre (San Diego), Totem Pole Playhouse, Barter Theatre, and Meadow Brook Theatre. She came to the local scene through Wayside Theatre as a member of the resident company in the mid-sixties and continued her acting success in numerous community productions of the local Quota and Exchange Clubs of Winchester as well as performing with the Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre in popular productions such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Cabaret" in both playing opposite her husband Harold Herman. In 1980 Ms. Herman worked beside Jean Stapleton in the National Tour of "Daisy Mayme".

Ms. Herman was on the faculty of Shenandoah University as director of the Children's Theatre. She created The Showmakers, a traveling troupe of young actors performing live theatre in the local schools as well as teaching a variety of classes in the theatre arts.

As a playwright she penned "Virginia Folktales" which was performed at Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts as well as "The Enchanted Attic" a charming play for young audiences, and the libretto for the operetta "Lizbeth" performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Herman; her children, Charla Hayen, Tara Bell, and Todd Hayen; her son-in-law, Richard Bell; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Hayen; and her brother, William Creekmore.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at the Jones Funeral Home in Winchester.

A memorial service is set for Friday, August 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre, Shenandoah University, with Dr. Diedra Kriewald officiating. Burial will be private.
