Oliver Newton Peer Jr.(1922 - 2013)

Oliver Newton Peer, Jr., 90, of Woodstock, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Greenfield Senior Living in Woodstock.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at the Edinburg Christian Church by Rev. Charles Wood with a viewing from 12 to 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Sunset View Memorial Gardens.

Oliver was born December 13, 1922 at Maurertown, VA, the son of the late Oliver Newton and Maude Spiker Peer. Oliver graduated from Toms Brook High School in 1941 and attended Shenandoah Business College. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion, fighting in the battle of the Bulge and receiving the Bronze Star.

Oliver worked for Irvin, Incorporated for many years and later owned and operated the Woodstock Coin Shop. Coins were a hobby and business for him for 35 years until he closed the shop in February 2012. He was a long time member of the Edinburg Christian Church, serving in various capacities, including church elder. Oliver was an active member of the Hamburg Ruritan Club and the St. Luke/Fairfield Ruritan Club for 55 years. He served as club president, District Governor and National Director. He was a member of the Woodstock Town Council for 14 years, serving from 1982 to 1996.

Oliver is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ola Mae Peer; daughters and husbands, Linda and Russell Fleming of Greenville, NC and Carolyn Younce and Ted Raper of Raleigh, NC; granddaughters and husbands, Lauren and Ryan Allen, Lindsay and Jesse Behrens, Sara and Matti Sundqvist; and one great grandson, Will Allen.

The family would like to thank Blue Ridge Hospice and the staff of Greenfield Senior Living for their care and compassion.
