Robert R. Green, 89, of Front Royal, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center in Winchester, VA.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 22, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at Front Royal United Methodist Church with The Rev. Gary Heaton and Dr. David McAllister-Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church 2 hours prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
He was born in Westminster, MD, the son of the late Ray C. and May L. Green.
Following his high school graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy
in 1943 and served in World War II
on a Landing Ship Tank. He participated in invasions of Anzio Beach, Italy, the Island of Elba, and Southern France.
After his discharge, he served as a free-lance carpenter. In 1958 the family moved from Westminster to Washington, D.C. where he took the position of Superintendent of Building and Grounds on the new campus of Wesley Theological Seminary. He retired from Wesley in 1985.
He enjoyed woodworking, furniture making, and gardening. Leading up to and during his retirement years, he delighted in owning and restoring a 200 year-old farm house on 20 acres in Paris, VA where he enjoyed times with his grandchildren with tractor rides and baseball games and fishing. He loved history and sharing information with others.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Caroline Danner Green; a sister, Mildred Davis of Hanover, PA; a son, Michael Green and wife Linda of Fairfax, VA; a daughter, Linda Misewicz and husband Mark of Crescent City, CA; a son, Bradley Green of Linden, VA; grandchildren, Kimberly Basha and husband Arif of Alexandria, VA, Kevin Green of Reston, VA, Jennifer Poe and husband Nathan of Gainesville, VA, Jeffrey Green of Fairfax, VA, Rachel Funderburk of Murrells Inlet, SC, Sharla Klingel and husband Martin of Charlottesville, VA, Troy Post and Sarah Lane of Stanardsville, VA, Jennifer Taylor and husband Mark of Warrenton, VA, Jessica Thornton and husband Josh of Gainesville, VA, Matthew Green of Remington, VA, and Nathaniel Green of Linden, VA; great-grandchildren, Rayan Basha, Zerin Basha, Joey Funderburk, Allen Klingel, and Lauren Klingel.
He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Madeline Strawsburg, Ruth Nightingale, Blanche Honig and Edith Ecker.
