William L. Simpson, 81, of Front Royal, Virginia (formerly of Annandale, Virginia) died Feb. 23, 2014 in Warrenton, Virginia of heart and kidney failure.
He was the son of the late Samuel Carson Simpson and Frances Richey Simpson of Front Royal.
Mr. Simpson was born and raised in Front Royal. He graduated from the University of Kentucky after serving four years in the Navy during the Korean War
. He moved to the Washington metro area in 1959 and worked for the Navy Department as an electrical engineer.
He retired in 1988 from the Naval Sea Systems Command after 29 years in various engineering and managerial positions. He then worked for defense contractors, CACI, Inc. and Techmatics, Inc. before retiring in 1995. He received the Navy Department's Superior Civilian Service award for his innovative contributions to surface ship maintenance and logistic support engineering.
In Annandale, he was a leader for the Cub and Boy Scouts, coached basketball and baseball for boys' clubs, was president of the Chapel Hill Civic Association, and served on the vestry and as Junior Warden of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He was a former member of the Society of Logistic Engineers, the U.S. Navy
League, the American Society of Naval Engineers, the American Legion, and the George Washington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Alexandria. In Front Royal, he was a former member of the Kiwanis, and a current member of the Calvary Episcopal Church, the Humane Society, the Heritage Society, the Mosby Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and a charter member of the Col. James Wood, Jr. Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
His wife of 53 years, Kathryn (Billie) Miller Simpson, predeceased him in July 2011.
Survivors include two sons, William Simpson, Jr, and his wife Patty and grandchildren Benjamin, Jonathan, and Shannon of Warrenton, VA; John Simpson and his wife Stacy and grandchildren Samuel, Adam, and Katie of El Dorado Hills, CA; and, a sister, Elizabeth (Bet) Royster of Richmond.
One other son, Samuel M. Simpson of Annandale, and a brother, Samuel R. Simpson of Front Royal, predeceased him.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014, 11:00 am at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal by the Rev. Deborah Rutter. Inurnment will follow the service at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal. The family will receive friends for a lunch reception at Mr. Simpson's historic home, 124 Luray Ave, Front Royal immediately following services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging, The Humane Society, or The Heritage Society.
