Betty Jean Ramey Shockley, 74, of Front Royal, passed away at Winchester Medical Center on July 24, 2014.

A funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Robert Jones on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Front Royal. Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal. The family will receive friends at Maddox Funeral Home on Monday, July 28, 2014 from 6 until 8 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Shockley's great nephews, Jonathan Ponson, Joshua Russell, Jason Wismer, Brian Wismer, Mike Wismer, Steve Brill II, Matthew Russell, and Brian Hazelwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Warren County Sanitation Department.

Mrs. Shockley was born August 1, 1939 in Warren County, Virginia to Ernest Franklin Ramey, Sr. and Vernie Elizabeth Stokes Ramey.

She married James "Miles" Shockley, Jr. on June, 13, 1964. They recently celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shockley was predeceased by her sister, Frances Ramey, and her brother, Ernest Ramey, Jr.

Mrs. Shockley is also survived by her daughter, Angela "Angie" Shockley, of Front Royal. She is survived by her brother, James Ramey, Sr., of Winchester, and Ralph Ramey, of Front Royal. She is also survived by 5 nieces, Teri Wismer, of Stephens City; Cindy Brill, of Front Royal, Pam Russell, of Winchester, Susan Dilandro, of Front Royal, and Sally Meredith, of Front Royal. She is survived by one nephew, Eddie Ramey, of Conway, SC. She is survived by many great-nieces and nephews, as well as great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shockley worked as a secretary for many years at several different companies, including the Silk Mill, Sears, and the Livestock Exchange. She also spent many years working as a babysitter for many children, including one of her great-nephews and two of her great-nieces. She was involved as a volunteer with Special Olympics and The Arc of Warren, Inc.

Mrs. Shockley was a gentle person who looked for the good in everyone and put the needs of others before her own. Her greatest joy in life was caring for her family, both immediate and extended. She gave unconditional love to everyone in her life and celebrated joys with them and soothed their hurts whenever she could. She will be missed more than any words can say.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and other healthcare workers of the Winchester Medical Center for the care and compassion shown to Mrs. Shockley and the family over the last few weeks.
