Irvin H. Welch, Jr., 93, of Front Royal, passed away Friday, November 16, 2012, after a brief illness and went to be with the Lord.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Front Royal Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. C. Thomas Rhyne. Burial will be private.
Mr. Welch was born September 16, 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware, son of the late Irvin H. and Corinne Mousley Welch. Irv graduated from Wilmington public schools and attended Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science.
He served in World War II as a medical technician for 45 months. He was stationed in the South Pacific Theater of Operations serving in Guam, Leyte, Okinawa, and Korea. He received the Purple Heart and The Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious service in the Philippines. While there, he also received a battlefield promotion to Second Lieutenant.
Irv worked for the American Viscose Corporation, FMC Corporation, and Avtex Fibers for 41 years holding various technical and management positions in the Textile Research and Development Department. He published over 30 articles on Dyeing and Finishing Rayon Fabrics and on Flame-Retardant Rayon Fibers. He also presented seminars on textile finishing and textile flammability at Penn State, University of Georgia, University of Iowa, University of Tennessee, North Carolina State, and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. Following retirement in 1982, Irv formed his own consulting company and continued active in the textile industry until 1985.
Irv was active in many local organizations and community projects. He was a member and past deacon of the Front Royal Presbyterian Church. He became a Rotarian in 1978 and was an active member of the Front Royal Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and was secretary of the Front Royal Rotary Club for 9 years. From 1995-1996, he served as the administrative assistant to Rotary Club District Governor Eric Adamson. He became an honorary member of Rotary in 2012. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a life member of the Warren Heritage Society and past president in 1984 and 1985. He served 6 years on the Board of Northwestern Community Services and 6 years on the Board of Samuels Library. He served 2 terms on the Front Royal Redevelopment Commission, 10 years as a member of the Front Royal Board of Zoning Appeals, and was a member of the Community Forum of Warren County Strategic Planning Partnership.
Irv's family meant everything to him. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Irv enjoyed golf and was an avid gardener. He grew many vegetables and delighted in sharing them with family and friends. Another hobby of his was woodworking and as long as he was able, he made many useful pieces in his shop. He took great pride in everything he did.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Hazel Caulk Welch; three children, Robert Irvin Welch and his wife Denese of Dover, DE, John Alan Welch and his wife Mary Ellen of Front Royal, and Christine Welch of Herndon; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by his sister, Betty Martin.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Front Royal Rotary Club.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to Front Royal Presbyterian Church, 115 Luray Avenue, Front Royal, VA 22630.
