James Uthel Smith, Sr. 87, a resident of Strasburg passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Greenfield Senior Living of Strasburg.

A funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 8, 2014 at Stover Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Howard and Pastor Dave Duckworth officiating. Burial will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg.

He was born in Carroll County, Virginia on October 20, 1926 a son of the late John William and Hattie Florence Milton Smith.

He was 1948 graduate of Strasburg High School, a U.S Army Veteran, and retired bus driver of 39 years with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a great-grandchild; four sisters, and two brothers.

Survivors include his beloved children Mary Ann Bradley of Strasburg, VA, and James U. "Butch" Smith, Jr. of Maurertown, VA; grandchildren Tabitha Haizlip, James Uthel Smith, III, Jackie D. Smith, John T. Smith, Lisa Evans, and Vicky Lertora; and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Smith Heishman of Strasburg, VA; sister-in-law, Evelyn V. Smith of Martinsburg, WV; and a special niece, Janet Sonner of Strasburg, VA.

Pallbearers will be Doug Miller, John Miller, Wayne Miller, Ronnie Stoneburner, Dean Elbon, and Richard Williams.

The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday evening.
