John Gordon MacCracken, 87, of Charlottesville and formerly of Edinburg, died Wednesday, January 22, following a short illness.

He was born June 15, 1926, in Mt. Vernon, NY, the son of the late John E. MacCracken and Barbara Frost MacCracken Shively.
He graduated from Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts, and then attended Yale until July 1944, when he joined the US Navy.
Upon discharge in 1946, he enrolled in and graduated from UCLA with a degree in Theater Arts, then joined the Foreign Service in Washington, DC. He earned the degree of Master of Public Administration at Harvard in 1958. His diplomatic postings included Washington DC, Boston, Frankfurt, Berlin, Moscow, Brussels and Vienna.
Following his retirement in 1978, he and his wife, Ann, moved to Edinburg. John enjoyed participating in community theatrical productions and took voice lessons at Shenandoah University. After Ann's death, John moved to Charlottesville in 2009 to live with his daughter.
He is survived by his daughter, Jean M. Mackay of Charlottesville, and his son, Andrew F. MacCracken, and Cecilia, of Alpharetta, GA; five grandchildren; and a half brother, Charles M. MacCracken of Memphis, TN.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Virginia, in Charlottesville.
No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Volunteer Farm
or to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
