Alan Gerard Toxopeus, 77, died Monday, December 2, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Muskegon, Michigan on May 9, 1936 to Fred and Andena (Madendorp) Toxopeus.

Al graduated in 1954 from Western Michigan Christian High School. He attended Muskegon Community College from 1954 to 1955 and then graduated with honors from Michigan State University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He received a Masters in Accounting from Michigan State University in 1958. He was a lifelong avid Spartan supporter and a member of the Michigan State Benefactors Society.

Al was a member of many scholastic and professional societies including: Phi Theta Kappa, a Community College Scholastic Society, Beta Alpha Psi, an Accounting Scholastic Society, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Virginia and Michigan Societies of Certified Public Accountants.

Al proudly served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant (E-6). He enjoyed working as a certified public accountant his entire life. He worked for Ernst & Ernst upon graduating from Michigan State and then went on to work for U.S. Industries, Inc. in Detroit, Michigan. In Winchester, he worked for O'Sullivan Corporation, Shockey Companies, and Yount Hyde & Barbour before working as an independent corporate controller.

He enjoyed volunteering with civic and community organizations. He was a past president of the Winchester Rotary Club as well as a Paul Harris Fellow and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Winchester Rotary Club in 1997. He was president of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in 1983 and 1984. He was a past chair of the Winchester/ Frederick County United Fund and a past president of the Winchester Torch Club. He served on the boards of many local organizations including Winchester Chamber of Commerce, Henry & William Evans Children's Home, Powhatan School, Wayside Foundation for the Arts, Winchester Country Club, and Winchester Musica Viva. He was a graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership and served on its State Board. He was also on the Northwest Community Services Board, the Winchester Planning Commission, and the Metropolitan Planning Organization. He was a proud member of the Convivial Conversationalists. He also enjoyed volunteering at Jubilee Kitchen.

Al was a lifelong advocate for community colleges. He was on the board of directors for Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) and chair of the board from 1992 to 1993. He was also a member and chair of the LFCC Foundation. He received an honorary degree from LFCC in 2004. He was then appointed to the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges and served as chairman from 2006 to 2007. He and his wife, Marge, received the 2010 Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy from the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education.

Al had a strong Christian faith, which he enjoyed sharing with all who knew him and especially his confirmands at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret E. Toxopeus, his sister, Carolyn M. Sturrus, his brother, Fred Toxopeus, and his sister, Judith A. Kleeves. He is also survived by his daughter, Gretchen E. Pyles and her husband, Christopher, and his daughter, Katrina A. Vanderveen and her husband, David and his grandchildren, Emma E. Pyles, Kate A. Vanderveen, Audrey A. Pyles, J. Declan Pyles, and Jack A. Vanderveen.

He is predeceased by his son, Jonathan A. Toxopeus.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Richard Reifsnyder officiating.

Pallbearers will be Harry F. Byrd, III, William H. Clement, Robert Kilzer, John P. Lewis, Christopher J. Pyles, and David J. Vanderveen.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester.
