Donald E. Garber, Sr., 85, of Winchester, VA died Thursday, March 7, 2013.

Mr. Garber was born on January 9, 1928 in Winchester, VA, the son of the late Charles Eli and Nora Lee Spitzer Garber. He married Leah Ann Jennings July 18, 1953 in Woodstock, VA. She preceded him in death May 23, 1984.

He served as corporal and drill instructor in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Garber was owner and operator of Garber's Ice Cream, retiring in 1990. He was a graduate of Handley High School, class of 1947, was a member of American Legion Post 21, Elks Lodge 867, the Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, Woodmen of the World, and a past member of the Exchange Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Garber Izzett, and her husband Donald of Stephens City, and Ann L. Garber of Stephenson, VA; two sons, Donald E. Garber, Jr. of Quantico, VA, and David T. Garber and his wife Debra of Winchester; three sisters, Patricia G. Biggs of Winchester, Mildred M. Ashby of Annapolis, MD, Janet G. Ziviello of Long Island, NY; and six grandchildren, Jennifer L. Carpenter, Whitney E. Brandt, Melissa A. Brandt, Wayne M. Brandt, IV, Daniel T. Garber and Emily L. Garber, and four great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, James A. Garber, Julian F. Garber, O. Lee Garber, Charles E. Garber, Jr., Richard K. Garber, W. Arnold Garber and Robert C. Garber, and one sister, Alma G. Biggs.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David N. Young officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Grimes, Steve Shaver, Daniel Garber, Wayne Brandt, IV, Jeff Owens and Russell Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Rhoton and Steven Rhoton.

Family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gainesboro Fire Dept., 221 Gainesboro Road, Winchester, VA 22603.
