Eric Magalis was born August 27, 1933 in Harrisonburg, VA, son of Joseph H. and Della P. Hensley Magalis. He died at the Commonwealth Assisted Living Facility June 9, 2018, aged 84 years, surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Riverton United Methodist Church near Front Royal Saturday, June 30 at 11 a.m.

Early childhood years were spent at the family home in McGaheysville, VA, east of Harrisonburg.

He moved to Front Royal in 1944 and served in the U.S. Air Force.

He married the love of his life, Norma Jean Steed, in 1952.

Eric worked in the auto parts industry during early married life. He drove for ITSI for a short time, then became a carpenter with the D.C. area Carpenters Union Local 2033. He worked on mainly large projects in the D.C. metropolitan area.

He was interested in most sports including motor racing. In the late 1950's and early 1960's he was active in Go-Kart racing. He was quite successful mostly driving for other Kart owners.

He became interested in the Jaycees sponsored Virginia Championship Canoe races when they began. All three of his sons participated with Eric at different times. He found success in the Down River, Whitewater, and The Sprint Race. He was a founding member of the Shenandoah River Canoe Club and really enjoyed time on the Shenandoah River with family or friends.

Eric encouraged his sons and grandchildren to engage in sports and other activities. Even when employed in the D.C. area he would be present at most all games and concerts, plays, or anything his children or grandchildren were involved in.

He had a great talent and love of music, and enjoyed serving with the United Methodist Men's group at Riverton UMC.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and eldest son, Kerry Lane Magalis.

Eric is survived by a sister, Janice M. Eshelman of Front Royal; a brother, Donald C. Magalis of Florida; sons, Jeff (Teresa) Magalis and Kelly (Stephanie) Magalis; daughter-in-law, Becky Magalis; and grandchildren, Kerry L. (Kahle) Magalis II, Bethaney Moxley, Jordan L. Magalis, Kelsey Magalis Smith, Ryan Magalis, and Erin Magalis.
