James William Atwood, 57, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at University Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.

He was born June 21, 1961 in Hillsville, Virginia to the late William Dale Atwood and Elizabeth Raye Jennings Atwood.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Juanita Eileen Atwood of the home; daughter, Katelynn Fox and her husband Michael of Crozet, Virginia; sons, Geoffrey and Caleb Atwood of the home; two cats; and one Newfoundland dog.

He served four years in the U.S. Army and two years in the Ohio National Guard.

He was an air traffic systems maintenance technician for the FAA, retiring after 32 years of federal service.

He was a very proud member of multiple Masonic organizations: Unity Lodge No. 146 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Front Royal, Virginia; Hiram Chapter of Royal Arch Masons No. 45 in Front Royal; Front Royal Chapter No. 6 Order of the Eastern Star; and Winchester Commandery No. 12 in Winchester, Virginia. He achieved his personal goal and became a member of the Knights Templar. Over his Masonic career, he served in the East in all but one of those organizations.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the UVA Cancer Center Patients & Friends Research Fund, P.O. Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908-0773.
