Janet Elizabeth Sollenberger Kilby, formerly of Woodstock, VA, passed away on May 1, 2014, at the Westminster Canterbury Retirement Community, Winchester, VA.

Janet was born on April 22, 1924, in Franklin County, PA, the daughter of Charles William Sollenberger and Evelyn Ausherman Sollenberger. She grew up in Woodstock and attended Madison College (now James Madison University), graduating in 1946 with a major in home economics. For several years she was employed as a home extension agent for Rappahannock County, VA.

In 1951, she married Dr. Walter Leroy Kilby, now deceased, and they set up housekeeping in Baltimore, MD, where they raised their two daughters, Janet O. Kilby ("Phoebe"), now of Maurertown, VA, and Margaret H. Kilby, now of Washington, DC.

Dr. and Mrs. Kilby retired to Woodstock, where they were members of the Woodstock United Methodist Church; Janet served on its administrative board. She enjoyed very much being a member of the Shenandoah Garden Club of Woodstock, serving several years as president. She was a lifetime member of both the Virginia and the National Federations of Garden Clubs.

Mrs. Kilby is predeceased by her three brothers: Robert Lewis Sollenberger, Charles Thomas Sollenberger, and Edmund Ausherman Sollenberger (her twin, "Teddy").

She is survived by her daughter Janet O. Kilby and her husband James Barry Carpenter, her daughter Margaret H. Kilby and her husband Martin Rothfield, two sisters in-law, Elizabeth Gough Sollenberger of Woodstock, VA, and Cornelia Sollenberger of Orlando, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Woodstock United Methodist Church, 156 S. Muhlenberg Street, Woodstock, VA 22664, at 3:00 pm on Thursday, May 8, with the Reverend Robert Hoskins, Jr. officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Woodstock United Methodist Church.
