Joseph Edwin Pifer, Jr., age 94, of Strasburg, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Skyline Terrace Nursing Home, Woodstock.

A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Strasburg Christian Church with Mr. Dennis Hupp officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg with military honors by Shenandoah American Legion Post No. 77, Strasburg.

Mr. Pifer was born September 14, 1918 in Harrisonburg, a son of the late Joseph Edwin and Mary Irene Copp Pifer, Sr. He was a member of the Strasburg Christian Church and the Men's Bible Class, had served as an Elder, Deacon, past Sunday School teacher, past chairman of Church Board, member of Shenandoah American Legion Post No. 77, former member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Chapter No. 4186, member of the Strasburg Moose Lodge, Strasburg Rotary Club and Strasburg Town Council. Joe was co-owner of The News Stand in Strasburg for 50 years and former co-owner of Pifer's Gifts and Jewelry Shop. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp. Joe loved his family, church, community and loved to dance.

Surviving are his wife, Eva Mae Artz Pifer; his sister, Ellen Pifer Mossberg of Gaithersburg, MD; a niece, Karen Everhart of Arlington; two nephews, Stanley Pifer of Arlington and Karl Mossberg of Gaithersburg, MD; two great-nieces, Valerie Patel and Kristina Hawkins; a great-great-nephew, Owen Hawkins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Marshall Pifer on December 2, 1999.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Bible Class of Strasburg Christian Church.

The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home, 177 N. Holliday Street, Strasburg on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
