Dr. Malcolm Coleman Harrell, 83, of Virginia Mennonite Community, Harrisonburg, Virginia, died Monday, December 19, 2011.

He was born on April 5, 1928 in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Curtis Parke Harrell and Shirley Sowers Harrell.

He spent his early years in Luray, Virginia and in 1945 joined the U.S. Navy. After his service, he attended Mars Hill Junior College in Asheville, North Carolina, the University of Richmond, and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1954.

In 1951, he married Rebecca Nancy Spahr of Kingwood, West Virginia. In 1955, they moved to Timberville, Virginia where Dr. Harrell had a dental practice for 35 years. They later built a retirement home in Edinburg, Virginia.

Dr. Harrell was a member of the Virginia Dental Association, the Shenandoah Valley Dental Association, various Dental Study Clubs and was a Fellow of the Virginia Dental Association. He was active in church work, holding many offices including that of Trustee. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Lion's Club, and worked with Habitat for Humanity of Shenandoah County.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Vicky H. Germroth and husband Jerry of Edinburg, Nancy H. Lowden and husband Mike of Richmond, and Beth H. Papworth and husband Richard of Virginia Beach. There are five grandchildren, Julie, Jennifer, Jill, and Greg Germroth, and Joshua Papworth. Also surviving is a brother, Philip Harrell of Luray, Virginia.

He was pre-deceased by one sister.

A memorial service will be held in Strite Auditorium, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community on Friday, December 23 at 10:30 a.m. with a visitation following. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VMRC Good Samaritan Fund, 1491 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
