Melvin Francis Markley, 99, of New Market passed away Monday night, July 8, 2013 at the Veterans Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

He was born May 4,1914 at Jerome in Shenandoah County and was the son of the late Paul and Victoria Bowers Markley.
He graduated from Triplett High School in Mt. Jackson and was a disabled veteran having served in the US Army during World War II.
Melvin and his wife, Jean, owned & operated the In-Between Store in Maurertown for over thirty years. They also owned and operated the Rancho Campground at New Market, which they purchased in the early 1960's. They moved to New Market in 1983.
He was a member of the Edinburg Masonic Lodge and VFW Post 2447 in Edinburg and a life member of the Woodstock American Legion.
On May 25,1946 he married the former Jean C. Fansler, who passed away April 3, 2010.
He is survived by a son, Jon Markley of Maurertown; a daughter, Tacy Hawkins and her husband, Dan of New Market; a grandson, Mark Hawkins and his wife, Kate of Middletown; two great grandchildren, Adam and Sarah Hawkins and many nieces and nephews.
Two brothers are predeceased, Albert and Elmer Markley.
Mr. Markley was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Jerome, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday. The Rev. James Baseler will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with graveside rites being conducted by members of the Woodstock American Legion.
The visitation will be held 7 - 8 p.m. Friday at the Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.
