Robert "Bob" Joseph Whitehurst Jr., 70, formerly of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away July 2, 2018 in New Market, VA.

Bob was born in Bethel, NC, the son of Robert Joseph Whitehurst and Anne Johnson Whitehurst.

He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Beth; his parents; and his wife, Olivia Frederickson Whitehurst. 

Bob is survived by his children, Robert J. F. Whitehurst and Eleanor Whitehurst Durm (Tim); his sister, JoeAnne Whitehurst Jones (Walter); sister-in-law, Betty Lind Barbatsuly (Mark); and nieces, Ashley Jones, Lisa Barbatsuly Richardson (Chris), and Kathryn Barbatsuly.

Bob was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy and Wake Forest University, where he was initiated as a brother of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Bob served a tour in the N.C. National Guard, and upon his return he worked in the N.C. Department of Agriculture  for several years. Bob served as Mayor of his Hometown of Bethel during the late 1970s to early 1980s.

In 1982 Bob married the love of his life, Olivia "Livy" Frederickson of Mt. Jackson, VA. The couple lived in Greenville, NC for two years, during which time they had their first child, Robert J.F. Whitehurst, in 1984.

In 1985 the family moved to Mt. Jackson, VA where, in 1986, Eleanor was born.

In 1989 the family settled in Harrisonburg, VA.

Bob and Livy managed Frederickson Family Partnership, formerly Turkey Knob Orchards, in Mt. Jackson until Livy's death in 2006.  Bob continued to operate family properties in Virginia and North Carolina until he suffered a stroke in 2010.

Bob was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg, VA, and participated in several community organizations including, Harrisonburg Lion's Club and Rotary Club of Harrisonburg, and served on the board of Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company.

A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. July 14, 2018 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 5983 South Main Street, Mt. Jackson, VA 22842.
