Rodney Lee Racey, age 82, of Strasburg, VA passed away at Winchester Medical Center early morning on Thursday, September 27, 2012 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

A memorial service for Mr. Racey will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Stover Memorial Chapel with Pastor Carter Alsberry and Sonja Williams-Giersch officiating. Burial will follow at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick, VA.

Rodney was born January 8, 1930 to the late Aimee Elizabeth Pollard and Griffith Lewis Racey. He was the eldest of five children.

He graduated from Strasburg High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Army shortly after. He served as an Honor Guard for General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War from November 1947 to 1948.

After returning from active duty, he married Mary Ellen Finks Racey on December 29, 1950. They were married for 46 years and had three children, Marsha, Jiggy and Melissa.

Rodney worked at Columbia Gas and retired after 35 years of service in 1988. He was a Charter member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Strasburg Guard Camp Number 1587. He was an avid volunteer at the Strasburg Compassion Cupboard.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Racey (as a toddler), his parents, Aimee and Griffith Raceycand his wife, Mary Ellen Racey who passed away September 23, 1997.

He is survived by his siblings, Sue Kline of Strasburg, VA, Peggy Hatter of Troy, NY and Bill Racey of Strasburg, VA; his 2nd wife, Jean Ellen Zirkle Hottle Racey of Strasburg; daughter, Marsha Finks Racey-Stilwell and her husband Myles Fosberrey Stilwell of Palmerston North, New Zealand; son, Jerome "Jiggy" Griffith Racey of Strasburg, VA and his sons, Rodney Lee Racey II, his wife, Allison of Knightdale, NC and Jerome "Jerry" Griffith Racey, Jr. of Strasburg, VA; daughter, Melissa Racey Kibler, her husband Richard D. Kibler, Jr., of Woodstock, VA, and their daughters, Rebecca Leigh Kibler and Elizabeth Ashley Kibler.

The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m.
