Gordon K. Zirkle, 89, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Montvale, VA.

He was born in New Market, on October 15, 1922. His parents were the late Lewis H. Zirkle and Augusta (House) Zirkle.

Upon graduating from New Market High School in 1939, he entered the University of VA, taking up the study of law. World War II interrupted his studies. He served in the Navy from 1943 - 1946, as a Lieutenant, on the U.S.S. Star. He was in the battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and others.

After receiving an honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to the University of VA, and graduated in 1947. He earned his ministerial degree at Capital University of Theology and Gettysburg Seminary, and was ordained a Lutheran minister in 1950. He served as pastor of the Capon-North River Parish from 1950 -1959, while residing at Wardensville, WV. He also served a term as Mayor of the Town. His next assignment took him to Front Royal, VA to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he remained until 1967. He retired from the ministry in 1969.

In the mid-1970ás he compiled two books ZIRKLE FAMILY IN AMERICA, VOLUMES I AND II.

During the 1980ás and 1990ás, Gordon served as a volunteer at the VA Medical Center in Salem, VA. For his efforts, he received a Certificate of Appreciation for 12,500 hours of service.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Zirkle; brothers, Lewis, Harold, and Franklin.

Surviving are sisters, Natalie Cadmus, Jean Zirkle, and Louie Will; and sister, in law, Penny Zirkle.

The body was cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date at Hebron Church in Yellow Spring, WV.

Arrangements are by Loy-Giffin Funeral Home in Wardensville.
