Sgt. First Class Lester Vernon Kump (US Army Retired), 83, of Winchester, VA passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Kump was born on June 7, 1930, in High View, WV, and is the youngest son of the late Clement Imboden and Jessie Cora White Kump.

He retired after 23 years of proud service in the United States Army. He served in the Korean War (including the Battle of Inchon) and also in the Vietnamese War. He was a life-long member of Timber Ridge Christian Church in High View, WV, where he had acted as a Deacon. Mr. Kump had been a member of the Hiram Lodge #21, A.F. & A.M. in Winchester, VA. Humility was his hallmark; he dearly loved his God, his Country and his family.

Mr. Kump married LaRue Armstrong Kump on December 29, 1975 in Timber Ridge Christian Church.

Surviving along with his wife of 38 years is a son: Jeffery L. Kump of Cross Junction, VA; four daughters: Sherry L. Richardson (Don) of Strasburg, VA; Pamela J. Hanes (Lonnie) of Gerrardstown, WV; Wendy R. Rohr (Jeff) of Buckhannon, WV; Paula G. Carver (Eddie) of Rock Cave, WV; a step-son: Matthew C. Sunderlin (Lisa) of Harrisonburg, VA; 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by a half brother: Glenn Kump of Gore, VA; a half sister: Catherine Fauver of Winchester, VA and his beloved canine companion Miss Mandy of Myrtle.

He is preceded in death by a step-son: Homer W. Sunderlin; six brothers: Herbert, Melvin, Marshall, Calvin, Richard and Denzil Kump; a sister: Dorothy K. Dicks and a half sister: Hilda LaFollette.

A service celebrating his life will be held at Timber Ridge Christian Church in High View, WV on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at 11 AM. The Rev. Greg Kenney will officiate.

The pallbearers will be his grandsons: Rodney Hanes, Stephen Kump, Joshua Kump, Wesley Carver, Tony Rohr and Jacob Kump. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends at the Giffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge, WV, Friday, February 14, 2014, from, 6 to 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601, to Timber Ridge Christian Church, P. O. Box 66, High View, WV 26808, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, New York, NY 10004.
