Joan N. Goode, 88, of Stephens City, VA, died on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Blue Ridge Hospice, Winchester, VA after a brief illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Joan was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 5, 1925 to Dr. Robert G. and Irene Bevern Nothwanger. She met her first husband, Warren Gibson Jones, Jr. of Paris, VA and Winchester, while she was a stewardess for Panagra Airlines. She moved to the United States when she was 23, and proudly became an American citizen while living and raising her three children in Long Island, New York. She returned to Virginia after Warren retired. They were married for 28 years. She was married to her second husband, Richard U. Goode of Berryville, for 23 years. Both preceded her in death.
Her real love (after her family) was volunteering. She started young by serving four years at the British Hospital in Buenos Aires.
She provided translating and transportation services for FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) both in Long Island and Winchester. Dearest to her heart was Blue Ridge Hospice, where she gave many hours of her time as a patient volunteer for almost 20 years. She was named Volunteer of the Year in 1994, and received the Founders Award in 2010. Her love of crafting and card stamping benefited many people, including Hospice and her former church, Cunningham Chapel Parish in Millwood, VA where she served actively for many years. When not volunteering, she loved to play bridge and travel.
She was happiest when she was serving others. Her big heart and willingness to serve the Lord and others will be sorely missed.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful people at Blue Ridge Hospice who cared for her so lovingly. It is fitting that she spent her final days there.
She leaves behind two sons, Robert Jones (Ora Lourie) of Hypoluxo, FL and Daniel Jones (Kari) of Stephens City, VA, a daughter, Cynthia Buck (Peter) of Charlotte, NC, and step-daughter Susan Goode of Troy, VA. She leaves a sister, Kathleen Dunn, in Argentina, as well as four grandsons, Wes and Daniel Buck, Kevin and Brian Jones, two step grandchildren, Stephanie and Clay Gruff, and great granddaughter Charlotte Gruff.
Three brothers predeceased her, Robert Nothwanger of Charlottesville, Virginia and Arthur Nothwanger and George Cameron of Argentina.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 A. M. Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Sherando Presbyterian Church, Stephens City, VA, with Pastor Tim Arnold officiating, with a fellowship gathering to follow at the church.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 P. M. Monday evening at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, VA.
At her request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St. Winchester, VA 22601.
