John Lynwood Hoffman, 89, of Broad Run, VA passed away on June 9, 2014 at his home.

He was born on October 11, 1924 at Strasburg, VA, a son of the late James Benton Hoffman and Mae Lillie Orndorff Hoffman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Harris; his brother, Donald Lee Hoffman and his granddaughter, Erin Figgins.

Mr. Hoffman was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict serving in the US Navy. He worked as a surveyor for Massey Engineers and retired from Fairfax County Department of Public Works. Always enjoying the outdoors, Mr. Hoffman donated land to the Devilás Backbone State Forest and was an active member of the American Chestnut Foundation. He also took part in historical preservation projects such as the Hampton Cemetery Association and others. He was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Warrenton.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice I. Hoffman; three daughters, Linda (Ray) Figgins, Star Tannery, VA, Catherine (Steve) Palmateer, New Paris, PA and Sandra (Joe) Benfit of Broad Run, VA; four siblings, James Franklin Hoffman, Callao, VA, Robert Clark Hoffman, Alexandria, VA, Nancy Mae Hoffman Donovan, Warrenton and Charles Connie Hoffman of Pensacola, FL; four grandchildren, Renee Breeding, Merideth Wilhelm, Bruce Stocking and Laura Jones; eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Andrew, Ashleigh, Alyson, Austin, Aaron John, Abbie and Faith.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 11 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Warrenton, VA and one hour prior to a funeral service which begins at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 12, also at the church. Pastors Michael and Terri Church will officiate.

A second funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 12 at 3:00 PM at Gravel Springs Lutheran Church, 1870 S. Pifer Road, Star Tannery, VA, with Pastor Russell Silar and Pastor Sonya Williams-Giersch officating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
