John William Sweeney, 78, of Winchester, died Friday, June 13, 2014 in Commonwealth Assisted Living, in Front Royal.

He was born December 18, 1935 in Woodstock the son of William F. and Katherine Sheets Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney had been a truck driver for H. H. Omps for 36 years.
He was an avid fisherman.
Surviving are his loving companion Helen Davis, of Stephenson; two sons Jeff and Scott Sweeney both of Winchester; two siblings, Donald Sweeney of Winchester and Phyllis Kipps of Maurertown; four grandchildren, Colby, Scott Jr., and Cody Sweeney, and Allyson Sweeney Carroll; and two great grandchildren.
A daughter, Kimberley Sweeney is deceased.
A funeral service will be Thursday at 12:00 p.m. in Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester with Pastor Ken Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Casket bearers will be Mike Stotler, Allen Snapp, Travis Carroll, Colby Sweeney, Scott Sweeney, Jr., and Frankie Orndorff.
Friends will be received on Wednesday 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
