Barbara Ann Lucas Picciuto, 86, of Woodstock, Virginia, passed away Sunday January 22, 2012 at Greenfield Assisted Living.

Barbara was born on February 25, 1925 in Owosso, Michigan to Bates and Cecile Proper Lucas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dean Lucas; and sister, Bette Shaughnessy Reynolds.

While attending Michigan State University, she played championship tennis and graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1946. During her college years, she met and married Nicholas T. Picciuto of Millburn, New Jersey and later relocated to Livingston, New Jersey where they made their home.

Barbara went on to teach second grade at Central Avenue School in Madison, New Jersey, retiring after 30 years of service. Other activities included membership in Livingston Presbyterian Church, Livingston Women's Club and serving as a docent at the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey.

After moving to Toms Brook, Virginia in 1994, she continued her volunteer service at Winchester Medical Center; as a docent at Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown, Virginia and delighted in reading to children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Strasburg, Virginia. An accomplished watercolor artist, Barbara created many paintings, one of which won a blue ribbon at the Shenandoah County Fair in 2011.

She is survived by her children, Leigh Ann Dieterle of Boca Raton, Florida, Thomas D. Picciuto and his wife Kay Lawrence Picciuto of Woodstock, Virginia; two grandchildren, Tara and Cameron Dieterle; three step-grandchildren, Leslie Adams Valenzuela, Tyler and Christopher Adams; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Barbara will be remembered for her love of life and her loyalty and devotion to her family and dear friends.

A memorial service will be officiated by Rev. Nathan Robinson at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 127 E. High Street, Woodstock, Virginia on February 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet visitors in the church Sanctuary for one hour prior to the service. A private interment at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia will follow.
