The Rev. Robert Warren Koons, 95, of 263 Barlow Street, Gettysburg, PA, died peacefully at his home and surrounded by his family on All Saints' Day, November 1, 2012.

The son of John Raymond and Kathryn Herr Koons, he was born July 11, 1917 in Altoona, PA and lived his early years in Harrisburg, PA. In 1949 he married Grace Bowman of Timberville, VA. Their lives together spanned 57 years, until Grace's death at 89 in 2006. He is survived by 3 children, 3 grand-children, and 9 great-grandchildren.

At the time of their marriage, Rev. Koons was the assistant pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, MD. In the years of their marriage they served congregations in Sunbury, PA, Gettysburg, PA, Lynchburg, VA and Winchester, VA. Upon retirement from active ministry, Rev. Koons served as Chaplain at the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary.

He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1943 with an A.B. in English and in 1946 earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Susquehanna University in 1958. In 1994 the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg honored him with its Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Memorial services will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg Street, Gettysburg, PA. A buffet reception will follow. Interment will be at approximately 2:45 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery.

The Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions in memory of Robert W. Koons may be made to the following: Lutheran Home Care and Hospice of Adams County; ELCA Disaster Response for Hurricane Sandy; and/or Lutheran World Relief.
