Lt Col. David D. Colcombe, USMC (retired), of Front Royal, 77, died peacefully with his family by his side on January 10 in Winchester, VA.

The first child of 8, Dave distinguished himself in athletics while attending the renowned Central Catholic High in Pittsburgh. He received a full scholarship to play football and baseball at Delaware University.

Dave joined the United States Marine Corps upon graduation from Delaware in 1957. In 1969, he received his Master's Degree at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Dave had a 22 year career with the Marine Corps which included 2 combat tours of Vietnam, 2 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Upon USMC retirement, Dave became a teacher and coach for Prince William County for 21 years.

Dave was predeceased in death by his wife of 49 years, Sharon.

Dave is survived by his wife, Esther, his 5 children, Lori Morrell, Linda Schwarz, David J., Kenneth, and Steven "Bo" Colcombe; 19 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Calling hours at Mountcastle Funeral Home on January 21 at 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA 22193, will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

On January 22 at 10:30 a.m., a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 18825 Fuller Heights Rd., Triangle, VA 22172. A military burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.
